Supports activities to develop and implement community based food systems from planning through to development and implementation. Food systems planning includes a broad range of activities that may include revitalization of traditional food systems, agriculture, community gardens, and local food sovereignty initiatives, and processing and preservation.
Intake Information
Interested applicants may contact the department at agriculture@gov.mb.ca or 1-800-811-4411 to arrange a discussion to see if your project fits within program eligibility and criteria. If deemed a fit, the department will invite you to submit a full proposal. Alternatively, you may be contacted directly by the department, based on the department's awareness/knowledge of your project.
Applicant Information Forms and Application Worksheets will be provided by the department, for those projects that have been deemed a fit with the program eligibility and criteria.
If you are invited to apply, full proposals will be accepted until 11:59 PM on January 30, 2025. Applications will not be accepted after this deadline.
Proposed projects must be based on a business plan, engagement outcomes, community development plan, feasibility study or other planning documentation. Applicants may be asked to provide this documentation to support the project application.
Eligible Applicants
The program is open to the following First Nation, Métis, and Inuit Indigenous Groups:
- Businesses and organizations
- Communities
- Government
- Primary producers
- Other Indigenous-led groups undertaking agricultural initiatives
Eligible Activities
The following activities are eligible for funding:
- Implementing projects identified in food system and/or business development plans
- Testing and adopting technologies or practices to enhance food systems
- Addressing climate change and enhancing climate change resilience
- Enhancing youth participation and food system education opportunities
- Scaling up of production and/or processing
- Revitalization of traditional food production and processing practices
Project Timeline
Projects will have up to 22 months to be completed:
- Projects shall start on, or after, April 1, 2025
- Projects must be completed no later than February 1, 2027
Cost Share Funding
Eligible applicants can be reimbursed for up to 100 per cent of total approved eligible costs, to a maximum of $200,000 per project.
